Capturing the 50th Anniversary of Variety – The Children's Charity of Iowa's Telethon
In March 2024, I had the distinct honor of photographing a milestone event—the 50th Anniversary Telethon of Variety – The Children's Charity of Iowa. This golden jubilee not only celebrated five decades of unwavering commitment to Iowa's children but also showcased the community's enduring support and generosity.
A Legacy of Compassion
Since its inception in 1975, the Variety Telethon has been a beacon of hope, rallying Iowans to contribute their time, talent, and resources to improve the lives of children who are at risk, underprivileged, critically ill, or living with special needs. Over the years, this annual event has evolved, but its core mission remains steadfast—making a tangible difference in the lives of thousands of children across the state.
The 50th Telethon: A Night to Remember
The 2024 Telethon was a testament to the organization's rich history and impact. Held on March 2, the event featured a pre-taped hour-long show that highlighted Variety's achievements, shared heartfelt stories from beneficiaries, and honored the countless volunteers and donors who have been instrumental in its success.
A Special Tribute to Rosalie Gallagher
One of the evening’s most touching moments was a tribute to Rosalie Gallagher, a true champion of Variety’s mission. Rosalie leads a team of women who have now raised over $7.9 million for Variety over the last 27 years.
Her dedication to helping children in need is truly inspiring. Rosalie first got involved with Variety because she wanted to make a difference in children's lives—and she has done just that. Year after year, she and her team have tirelessly worked to ensure Iowa’s children receive the support they need.

Behind the Lens: Moments That Mattered
As the official photographer, I was privileged to capture the essence of the evening:
Emotional Testimonials – Hearing families share their journeys and the profound impact Variety has had on their lives was both humbling and inspiring.
Volunteer Dedication – The passion and commitment of the volunteers, some of whom have been involved since the early years, were palpable. Their stories of dedication added depth to the event's narrative.
Community Engagement – The outpouring of support from local businesses, entertainers, and community members highlighted the collective effort that has sustained the telethon for half a century.
Looking Ahead
The 50th Anniversary Telethon was more than just a celebration—it was a call to action, a reminder that the work is far from over. I am beyond grateful to have played a small part in capturing the spirit of this incredible event.
