Photographing the 2025 Bravo Gala: A Night of Community, Celebration, and a Little Sparkle

The Bravo Awards Gala is one of the biggest nights in Des Moines for celebrating arts and culture. And if you ask around, you’ll hear it affectionately called β€œthe adult prom”—a night where everyone brings their fashion A-game, from classic tuxes and gowns to bold, statement-making outfits.

As an event photographer, I’m usually dressed in all black to stay behind the scenes, but this year, I decided to lean into the fun a little… by wearing bright pink sequined pants (which, for the record, got quite a few compliments). If I was going to spend the night capturing everyone else’s best-dressed moments, why not join in? And yes, I may have been spotted dancing a little as I worked the dance floor later in the evening. Couldn’t help myself!

The Event

Held at Hy-Vee Hall in the Iowa Events Center, the gala was packed with people who believe in the power of the arts to bring a community together. The night kicked off with a lively reception where DJ Eight Ten set the mood, and guests mingled over cocktails and appetizers. The energy in the room was electricβ€”everyone excited to celebrate, connect, and support something bigger than themselves.

The dinner and awards program highlighted some truly deserving honorees. Jim and Allison Fleming were recognized with the Bravo Award for their commitment to arts and culture in Des Moines, and CultureALL and the Central Iowa Wind Ensemble received the Spotlight Award for their work in bringing cultural education and live music to the community.

Once the formalities wrapped up, the dance floor quickly filled as The Crossroad Sound took over. Photographing this part of the night is always my favoriteβ€”capturing people genuinely having fun, laughing, and enjoying the moment. There’s something about a great live band that makes everyone forget they’re at a formal event and just have a good time.

Why This Event Matters

Beyond being a great night out, the Bravo Gala plays a huge role in keeping the arts alive in Des Moines. Proceeds from the event help fund arts, culture, and heritage organizations throughout the region. Even better? Any additional money raised goes directly to Passport to Culture, a youth arts program designed to introduce kids to the arts early on.

As I packed up my camera at the end of the night (and reflected on the absolute glory of my sparkly pink pants), I felt lucky to be part of an event that brings people together for something so meaningful. The arts shape our community in ways that go beyond entertainmentβ€”they make Des Moines a more creative, connected, and vibrant place to live.

Until next year, Bravo Gala. Now to start thinking about how to top the pink pants…
